Contemporary Abstract Expressionism

Paintings

An art movement that began in New York City in the 1940’s, Abstract Expressionism reached international acclaim and continued to evolve. From this school, my favorite artist’s were Robert Motherwell, Mark Rothko, and Barnett Newman. Later, Cy Twombly made an impression as well.

It’s difficult to make a good abstract painting. It’s easy to make a bad one. I want to make something that looks good, peaceful, or simply attractive. Abstraction can be more shocking to the eye than representational art, simply because it’s not immediately registering what it is exactly. That engagement pulls the viewer into thinking and feeling something. It could be a recollection of something seen in the world before, perhaps from childhood – or a place that hasn’t even happened yet.
